Happy Holidays!
It’s that time of year again, and if you’re like me, it’s all about the food! The last thing you need is a trip to the veterinarian during the holiday season. The following is a list to remind you of the things your dog should avoid at all times.
Onions and Garlic (raw, cooked, or powdered)
These contain a substance which can destroy red blood cells and cause anemia in dogs.
Table Scraps
Be sure to warn your guests that fatty, salty, and spicy foods can cause severe digestive upset which may even require hospitalization. Keep a jar of safe treats available if you want to include your dog in the festivities.
Bones from Meat, Poutry, or Fish
“Knick-knack Paddy-whack DON’T DO IT!!! Some of you may have gotten away with it in the past, but there is always a risk of obstruction or trauma to the digestive tract.
Macadamia Nuts
There is a substance in the nuts which is toxic to dogs. It can cause neurologic signs and digestive upset.
Candy or Gum containing Xylitol
Xylitol causes low blood sugar, which can make your dog weak or even lead to a seizure. In severe cases, liver failure can occur.
Chocolate
The caffeine in chocolate is very dangerous to dogs. Dark chocolate and the unsweetened chocolate used for baking around the holidays have significantly higher levels of caffeine.
Don’t forget that the ASPCA has an Animal Poison Control Hotline 888-426-4435
