Meet Nimue and Bilbo

Nimue came to us 16 years ago as a kitten. She was brought to our vet at the time by a “good Samaritan” who found her and another kitten huddled in a doorway in the Bronx. We had just lost our beloved cat after having her for only 18 months (she was a senior adoption from Bide-A-Wee) and the vet’s office called asking if we wanted to adopt the 2 kittens.

Although Nimue was only 1 month older than her health-challenged “brother”, she cared for and hovered over him like a mother until he passed away in December of 2010. She once “alerted” us that her brother Emrys was gravely ill by leading us to him, touching his nose and crying out repeatedly. It is because of Nimue that we got him to the vet in time and had 12 more years with him that we wouldn’t have had otherwise.  She is smart, affectionate, talkative, very serious and loves oatmeal. Nimue likes the quiet life now but she was quite athletic in her prime. She would often race through the house and howl loudly as she chased after toys or her unsuspecting brother. We adore her.

We adopted Bilbo last April after seeing him on the website, Petfinder. He had been rescued from the pound by a wonderful rescue group called Zani’s Furry Friends – a group that saw his potential as a fabulous guy right away. His papers from the pound stated that he had be brought there because he was “unpredictable and hisses at household members.” The rescue group gave him a second chance and neither they nor we have EVER seen him be anything but a sweet, silly cat who needs and gives lots of love. He was shy and skittish when he first arrived, preferring dark corners and not wanting to play. We’re glad to say that he’s blossomed into a happy, outgoing guy who loves to play – particularly a game of “fetch” with his favorite ball. He sings “love songs” to Nimue every day without exception despite her reluctance to accept his advances. He refuses to be discouraged in an exemplary demonstration of unconditional love. We adore him too.
